Punctuation

Title: The Punctuation People

Grade Level: First Grade

How I would use this in my classroom: I would use this in my classroom to help the students edit their work after they have written something. The students can use this to improve their writing and write the way they would speak. I would also play this video and stop after each explanation so the students can add that punctuation in where they feel it is necessary.

How the students would benefit from this video: This video would help the students visually see how to use the different forms of punctuation and when they are having trouble they can remember these "punctuation people" and how to use them correctly in their writing.

Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.2b Use end punctuation for sentences.

Pronouns

Title: Pronouns

Grade Level: First Grade

How I would use this in my classroom: I would show this video in my classroom right after I introduced the concept of replacing nouns with pronouns. I think this video makes things simple, fun, and easy to understand for younger children. It also offers good visuals so the students can see a concrete example of what it really means to replace the nouns with the pronouns and using them in the correct context.

How the students will benefit from viewing this video: From this video the students will now understand the concept of using these new words to replace longer proper nouns while writing or speaking. Some students tend to repeat the same words, such as names and places, so they will now know there are other options they can use rather than repeating the same words over and over again.

Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.1d Use personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns (e.g., I, me, my; they, them, their, anyone, everything).

Syllables

Topic: Syllables

Grade Level: First Grade

How I would use this in my classroom: I would show this video when introducing the concept of breaking down words. This video gives the students several different ways to break down words they are reading to make them into smaller and easier to understand pieces. The several different methods of learning how to figure out syllables will cater to the different types of learners I may encounter in my classroom.

How the students would benefit from viewing this video: By learning and understanding syllables, students will have better phonemic awareness and be able to both read and spell better. The students will now be able to practice this concept by following the examples and then using them when they are stuck on words that they find hard to pronounce.

Common Core State Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllable, and sounds (phonemes).
